A Workplace’s Best Asset? Your staff!

A Workplace’s Best Asset? Your staff!

It really doesn’t matter if you’re a trade association, a start up, an RLEC or a corporation – at the end of the day, your most valuable asset are the staff that you have on board.  That is why we think a great deal about what it takes to keep them happy, healthy, productive…and safe.

To that end, we just completed our mandatory series of training for our teams – in Arlington, in Asheville, North Carolina and around the country on sexual harassment.  I know that the media has spent a great deal of important time and space covering the #metoo movement and uncovering bad behavior that is coming to light but it is important for employers and employees to recognize that sexual harassment is not a woman’s issue, nor is it a man’s issue – it is truly a people issue.  In addition, it’s important to take that extra time to remind everyone what is appropriate behaviors in the workplace under the Civil Rights Act that cover and protect people based on their gender, age, orientation, religion etc.  As we covered the topic in our headquarters yesterday, it was productive to have everyone around the table at the same time so we could all be reminded together on the laws and best practices.  But in the end, it really does come down to the Golden Rule – treating others the way you want to be treated. (Or, through another filter I call the Bambi Rule via Thumper the rabbit….”it you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”)

As I looked around the table, I was struck by how much I like and respect our team and how much they have already contributed to creating a respectful workplace.  Our updated harassment policy also ensures that NTCA will endeavor to prevent the harassment of its employees by persons who are not NTCA employees, but who are on NTCA’s premises or who have a business or other relationship with NTCA, including NTCA members and vendors.  The world has shrunk and as interactions have grown, it is critical to us to ensure that our principles and values apply to the protection of our staff, no matter where they are at any given point in time.  It’s the least we can do for them.
